9 Simple Ways to Feel God’s Presence in Your Life
1. Practice Gratitude
Practicing gratitude is one of the most IMPORTANT ways to feel the spirit. To be mindful of what we are thankful for invites us to truly connect with God, and remember that all of the wonderful things that we have, both big and small, are all from Him. Now, there are a lot of ways to practice gratitude, here are a few!
- Get a gratitude journal
- Include what your grateful for in your prayers
- Tell someone (or multiple people) how grateful you are for everything they do, whether it’s your spouse, or your even your mailman
- When you wake up, or before you go to bed, name 5 things you are grateful for
If you practice gratitude regularly, it will soon become a state of mind, and you will notice that your overall mood can change when you focus on the good things in your life rather than the bad.
2. Surround Yourself With Positive People
They say that you are an average of the five people you spend the most time with. So being careful of who you select as your friends is an important thing to consider when you’re wanting to feel God’s presence.
You want to find friends who will uplift you, inspire you, encourage you, and support you in every way.
Look into your relationships with your friends, fellow church members, people at work, and any other social events you might attend. Look for people with similar morals and values, ambitions, who are going to respect your choices and decisions.
3. Be Careful of What You Allow Yourself to Be Influenced By
Sadly, God’s presence is drowned out of a lot of the things most people surround themselves with, so if we want to feel His presence, we have to be aware of what we are engaging in that might be pushing Him out.
Most of the music that’s on the radio is just awful, and almost all of the movies and television shows are obscene. The media in general just promotes hate. All kinds of hate! Hate for others, hate for ourselves. It’s nothing but everything God says not to do. So how could we possibly feel God’s presence if we are allowing ourselves to be surrounded by everything he warned us to avoid, that he said Satan would use to lure us away from Him?
To feel God’s love, and His presence, we have to surround ourselves with influences that invite the Spirit. That doesn’t mean that every song we sing and movie we watch has to be about Christ, but maybe it just doesn’t have to be about sex and drugs?
Making sure our influences are positive, uplifting and encouraging will go so far in allowing us to feel the Spirit in our daily lives.

4. Establish Your Core Values
Some people are well aware of what their core values are, and some people have no idea. But, figuring out what my core values are was a turning point in my life, and has really helped shape me as a person.
Every person’s top core values are going to be different, as out of alllll the values, you get to pick which ones matter the very most to you. For example, a few popular values are family, honesty, connection, respect, health, faith, integrity, spirituality, fun, friendship, peace, appreciation, forgiveness, loyalty, monogamy, etc. The list is endless.
You can pick your top 3, your top 5, or your top 10!
Establishing your core values is so important because it tells you who you are and what’s important to you. If you are ever feeling anxious, guilty, depressed, or out of sorts, it means you’re not in alignment with your core values. And odds are, if you are wanting to feel God’s presence more, faith or spirituality might be an important value of yours and it might be out of alignment. Your values tell you so much about yourself. Listen to them!
Here’s a personal core values quiz you can take to figure out what some of your core values might be, and an article along with it that talks a little more about what core values are and why they’re so important.
5. Serve Others
Something about helping others just feels so good, it truly brings joy to make another person feel better in any way. What better way to feel God’s love, than to give love to God’s children, just as he’s asked us to do?
And God doesn’t care how big or small the charity may be, or whether it goes unseen or not. Doing service in any form is sure to bring God’s presence into your life.
6. Fasting
In order to get a deeper connection with God, you can also try fasting. A lot of people fast when they are trying to get an answer from God. Throughout the bible, people have fasted for various amounts of time looking to get answers from God, or before beginning their journeys.
Fasting is a great way to increase your spiritual focus so you can tune in on His presence in your life, and get answers to any prayers or questions you might have been asking.
7. Prayer
While this might seem like an obvious one, there are many different ways to pray, and switching it up or trying something a little different might help! For example, if you’re not taking time to include things that you’re grateful for in your prayer, you can try doing that. Also, maybe you say your prayers before bed, try saying one in the morning before you wake up as well, to start your day off on a good note. Or, vice versa, say one before bed if you’re not already. Maybe you say them laying down, try to find a time to see if you can say one of your prayers on your knees.
If your family doesn’t say a prayer before meal time, you can get that started as a new routine to show some extra gratitude, and another way to feel the Spirit in the home.
Most importantly, what happens a lot is that prayer often just becomes routine. You say the same thing every time, you do it because you feel like you have to, and you don’t feel any connection, or like anyone is even listening. Try saying a prayer as if you’re just having a conversation with God. Pour your heart out to Him. Let Him know exactly how you feel. Prayers don’t have to sound any certain way. So let them sound authentic.

8. Read & Study Your Scriptures
Reading your scriptures can be an extremely powerful tool in feeling God’s presence if you really dive into it. I’ve found that the best way to study my scriptures is to read them on my own with a “Study-Bible” version of my scriptures, as it has a lot of helpful commentary, and then talk about scriptures with people through my church who really enjoy scripture study and know a lot about the topic. You can also find trusted sources online who have a lot of really cool scripture study videos.
It can also be really fun to study scriptures with your children, and do family activities to help them get to know the stories from the scriptures as well.
One thing you can do to really help carve out time for scripture study and prayer as well as stay organized is get a Christian planner! You can read the review of the one I use here!
9. Give More Time to God
I know that all of these things take time. And that life is busy, and everyone can already use MORE time as it is. But, trust me, time for things that will strengthen your connection with God is an investment.
But, Russell M. Nelson has a quote that has always stood out to me, and it has forever helped encourage me to make time for God…
“I promise you that as you consistently give the Lord a generous portion of your time, He will multiply the remainder.”
This doesn’t mean just praying and reading scriptures, this might be family time, volunteering, accepting a calling at church, anything you feel that God would smile down upon. And I believe it will all pay off, and He will make time for you to do everything else that needs to be done.
